Helicopters are pretty much the WORST possible aircraft for long-endurance surveillance. They have to intrinsically lift all of their weight by expending fuel, after all. At least airplanes can glide and require less power.
So I’m not exactly surprised that it got dropped. But it would be good if ARGUS could find a way out to theater as soon as possible, which is why the LEMV or BD2′s modularity seems attractive.
On a related note, the LEMV flies soon. I really wish it does well, and it’s an amazing vehicle, but for some reason I can’t help but think that HAV’s 4-type catamaran hulls are unforgivably ugly. It has a wierd pointedness at the bow and the stern is thicker. It bugs me. I know aesthetics shouldn’t matter, but why on earth is it so different than even the conventional-looking trimaran 6-type hulls?
Still think that the BD2 looks sophisticated as hell, though. Can’t wait to hear what decision was reached.
