If persistence is the key to detecting and defeating semisubmersibles, airships like the M1400, would seem to be the logical choice for an ISR picket line.

  1. Of course, airships are absolutely ideal for cheap, ultra long-endurance anti-smuggling missions. However, I think it is of even greater importance that airships are pretty much the ONLY suitable aircraft for the job. In other instances, such as on the border, aerostats are perfectly viable, although harder to take from one place to another. But on the sea? Aerostats can be based on ships, but he clearly superior option cost-wise and speed-wise is to use an airship. Drones are more costly to use too, both to purchase in the first place and to operate, the payloads are simply too small and the efficiency too low.

Also, this is unrelated, but if you’re still proposing things to do with “airships like the M1400,” does that mean that the Navy didn’t take the M1400? I guess it doesn’t matter, you probably couldn’t disclose that to me anyway.
